The History of Shawarma: From the Middle East to Silver Spring

Shawarma is more than just a delicious wrap—it’s a story of migration, culture, and flavor. Originating in the Middle East, shawarma has been enjoyed for centuries as street food made from slow-roasted meats carved from a vertical spit. Over time, it spread around the world, adapting to local flavors along the way.

Now, landed in Nigeria, sometime in the early 90s. Shawarma became a late-night favorite, much like suya—flavored with bold spices, creamy sauces, and extra fillings like hot dog and shrimp. Now, that Nigerian twist has traveled, again, across the Atlantic and found its home right here in Silver Spring. Gbam!
