President Biden just signed a bill establishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day.

The term Juneteenth is a blend of the words June and nineteenth.

Juneteenth was originally celebrated in Texas, on June 19, 1866. It marked the first anniversary of the day that African Americans there first learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after it was initially issued.

This day has come not only to mark the effective end of chattel slavery, but the reality that freedom and justice have been delayed for far too many. - Secretary Antony Blinken
